Le choix de la modernité avec le passage du métayage au fermage proposé par la propriétaire aura des conséquences inattendues sur la vie de Léon. jusqu'à une revanche éclatante grâce à l'attribution de la Légion d'Honneur. Le village se trouvera également bouleversé par l'idylle qui se noue entre le jeune curé et la nouvelle institutrice nommée dans l'école des bonnes sours.
Scandale et démission seront cette fois les conséquences, même si les amoureux trouveront quelques soutiens parmi les villageois. En racontant l'histoire de son grand-père avec beaucoup de psychologie et de finesse, l'auteur aborde les mesquineries des uns et des autres, les rivalités et les jalousies, les trahisons et les humiliations jusqu'à la réparation finale qui donne le titre à l'ouvrage ! EXTRAIT Au début des années 1920, après reprise de toute l'efficacité de la ferme, à onze et huit ans, les deux fils étaient encore trop jeunes pour suppléer à la déficience physique du père.
Un domestique, Florent Blézeau, avait été embauché à temps plein. Ce jeune homme de vingt-deux ans, solide et courageux, avait échappé de peu à la mobilisation en raison de son âge et de la présence de deux de ses frères au front. Il faisait un peu partie de la famille, cousin issu de germain, venant de la ferme de la Faisanderie de Vioré. La métairie était un modèle de tenue et de rapports. Malgré les qualités du valet, il était nécessaire, de temps à autre, de faire appel aux bras de quelques journaliers, lorsque le volume de travail l'exigeait.
